Olympics Women's Doubles 2024
Italy's Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini achieved a historic victory in the women’s doubles tennis final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. On Sunday, 4 August, the Italian duo triumphed over Russia's Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider in a thrilling third-set tiebreaker. The final score was 2-6, 6-1 (10-7), marking Italy’s first-ever Olympic tennis gold.
This victory is especially significant as it comes just after Lorenzo Musetti's bronze in the men’s singles, which ended Italy’s 100-year wait for an Olympic tennis medal. Additionally, Errani and Paolini’s win represents the first women’s tennis medal in Italian history.
Despite losing the first set, the Italians made a powerful comeback in the second set, ultimately forcing a tiebreaker. In the tiebreak, they managed to pull ahead from a 2-2 tie, securing their victory.
Paolini expressed her elation, saying, “It’s not easy after the first set, but we just wanted to do better in the second set. We gave everything, and we got the gold medal.” Errani also highlighted the mental toughness required to overcome the challenging first set, emphasizing their determination to succeed.
Earlier in the day, Spain's Cristina Bucsa and Sara Sorribes Tormo claimed the bronze medal after defeating Czechia's Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova.
