Tennis Rules
Now that you’ve got your racquet and shoes ready, where do you start? Discover the basics of the tennis game so you can start playing a proper tennis match. To start off, how do you decide who gets the first service? A coin toss decides who gets to serve first, or which side of the court you’d like to receive first.
Once you’ve decided who serves first, take note of the following. The server must start serving each point from alternative sides on the baseline. At no point must your feet move in front of the baseline on the court prior to hitting your serve. If you do so, that would constitute a foot fault.
What other kinds of faults are there? As a server, you have two opportunities to serve the ball within the service court. When you fail to get your first serve into the diagonally opposite service court, it is called a fault serve. This becomes a double fault if you fail to get your second serve into the diagonally opposite service court as well, and the receiver will then earn a point.
After that, what happens next? The server then continues serving the ball to the receiver until the set ends. After the set has ended, the receiver becomes the server and serves the ball until the next set ends. This process is repeated until the match is over.
So now that we know how to serve, how do we keep score? Points are awarded in scores of 15, 30 and 40, with 15 representing 1 point, 30 = 2 and 40 = 3. To win a game, you’ll need to get 4 points, with at least a 2 point lead. If a game reaches 40-40 it’s known as deuce. From deuce, you’ll need to win 2 consecutive points to win the game. If you win one point from deuce, you’re on advantage. If you win the next point you win the game, but if you lose it goes back to deuce.
Now that you’ve won a game, how do you win a match? First of all, you win a set when you win a minimum of six games with a 2 game advantage over your opponent (for example 6 – 0 or 6 – 4 but not 6 – 5). If the score is tied at 5 – 5, you must win 2 consecutive games before he wins a set, (for example 7 – 5 or 8 – 6). Matches are usually played in a best-of-3 or best-of-5 set format. This means the first player who wins 2 sets in a best-of-3 or 3 sets in a best-of-5 match will win the match. And now with all that knowledge, you’re ready to compete in your first ever tennis match!

If you are a more advanced player, you may want to take lessons more frequently too if your schedule allows.
Most of our beginner students are able to play after 2 months, assuming you take lessons consistently once or more every week. You are encouraged to be punctual for all your lessons. The coach will not be able to extend the lesson if you are late. The agreed upon lesson time and duration would include setting up of equipment (if any) and packing up of balls.
However, if your coach is late for whatever reason, we would make up the lost time for you.
In the event of inclement weather, you may choose to cancel and reschedule the class one hour before the commencement of the lesson if you prefer. There will be no charge.
However, if the rain has stopped for more than one hour prior to commencement of your lesson and you decide to cancel, the full lesson fee would apply.
If you are 15 minutes into your lesson, and unexpectedly it starts to pour heavily, it will still be counted as a full hour. Such occurrences are usually rare.
If the rain isn’t heavy, you may choose to continue if you are comfortable with the rain intensity. However, if you decide to stop, it will still be counted as a full hour.
The coach may be able to make up for the lost time by extending for you slightly during your subsequent lesson. However, this is subject to court availability and if your coach has time to do so.
